H&M MAKES A FASHIONABLE RETURN TO THE 2024 MET GALA WITH CUSTOM DESIGNS FOR AWKWAFINA, ADWOA ABOAH, PALOMA ELSESSER, QUANNAH CHASINGHORSE, HARI NEF AND STEFON DIGGS

H &M’s in-house design team, responsible for exclusive collections including H&M Studio, created the custom looks inspired by this year’s Costume Institute exhibition “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” and the Gala dress code, “The Garden of Time”. The exhibition theme inspired the brand to spend time with H&M archives from their 1947 roots as a small boutique in Sweden. Drawing on the optimism and ultra femininity of late 1940’s and 50’s fashion, the archives gave way to modern takes with dramatic, embellished looks in soft, romantic shades inspired by this year’s theme.

Two looks from H&M’s special collection archives, including a peach ruffle-trimmed recycled polyester maxi dress and a pale pink dress made from organic silk, viscose, and recycled polyester, will be on view in the new spring show. Originally from H&M’s 2017 Conscious Exclusive collection, the items selected serve as an industry example of the emotional connection that fashion can have with the natural world. Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion will be on view to the public from May 10 through September 2 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

“The Met Gala is a cultural phenomenon, and a moment for H&M to show off what we can do in terms of custom-made fashion. This year’s theme allowed us to create modern, one-of-a-kind designs inspired by our company’s rich heritage, worn to stunning effect by our guests,”

says Ann-Sofie Johansson, head of design womenswear and creative advisor at H&M, who also attended the gala.

“My Met Gala looks are always very instinctive – I love leaning into the theme, but I always want to feel completely like myself with the confidence to stand out from the rest. We created a look to mark a very special moment in my life.”

says Adwoa Aboah.

Awkwafina wore a custom gown that draws directly on an archival “Hennes” wedding dress, with a tulip skirt silhouette featuring a high slit in luxurious cream silk-zibeline. Its statement off-the-shoulder neckline is hand-embroidered with a delicate daisy decoration traced in beads and rhinestones. A co-ordinating embroidered pouch bag completes the look.

Paloma Elsesser wore a custom two-piece with sculptural significance. The top comprises a made-to-measure metallic bodice that has been 3D-printed and electroformed in an oxidised green colour. Made in Los Angeles by Michael Schmidt Studios, it’s embellished with 3D-printed calla lily flowers. The bodice is paired with a champagne-coloured silk taffeta skirt with a bubble hem, worn low on the hips to laid-back effect.

Quannah Chasinghorse wore a custom creation in forget-me-not blue, its ballerina-length silhouette drawing on the explosive power of a flower in bloom and its specific shade honouring her homeland Alaska’s state flower. The gown comprises a pure silk-satin gazar with a tulle crinoline underskirt that recalls a bygone era of grace. Quannah chose to accessorize her look with a beaded and tufted floral belt and earrings, both made by Indigenous designer Heather Dickson of Dickson Designs.

Adwoa Aboah wore a custom two-piece creation that epitomises contemporary femininity. The top comprises a capelet in fiery red silk organza, its tulle ruffles resembling petals, worn over a bralette delicately embroidered with rhinestones. It pairs with a voluminous bubble-hem skirt in red silk taffeta, lending an effortlessly modern edge to this charm-infused confection.

Hari Nef wore a custom column gown that channels old-school opulence, with a waist-cinching, floor-skimming silhouette in creamy taffeta overlaid with both translucent and mother-of-pearl style paillettes and sequins. Its timeless romance is enhanced by a sweeping cream taffeta bow with a modern liquid-organza sheen, secured at the back and left to trail poetically.

Stefon Diggs wore a custom suit that exemplifies relaxed tailoring, comprising a double-breasted blazer with strong shoulders and exaggerated lapels paired with wide-leg trousers. In midnight-blue crushed velvet shot through with lurex to create a fluid quality, with a deep V exposing a bare chest, its louche silhouette blends athleticism with elegance.

H&M HOME PRESENTS SUMMER 2024

H &M HOME presents a summer collection to evoke emotions, drawing inspiration from stylish locales and effortless cabanas and offering a fresh perspective on contemporary summer interiors. Here, living spaces transform into havens of tranquillity and style.

For the living room, plenty of inspiration comes from the sea, including scalloped-shaped vases, candle holders in the shape of a fish that come in two sizes, a delicate ceramic coral box for keepsakes and a striking ceramic coral sculpture. Why not add a shell-shaped pillow alongside a green and blue cushion cover print and a striped cotton blanket in refreshing tones of green for a curated living space.

Dining is decorative this summer, with the palm motif print offset by a colour mix of green and blue adorning both dining plates, salad bowls, serving platters and coasters. Mix with a heavy glass carafe with green and blue camouflage spots with matching glasses and a print table cloth for the perfect table setting. To add more detail, include the mini fish-shaped serving bowls available in yellow, blue, green and white, with a matching mid-sized blue serving platter and a larger green serving bowl.

No summer retreat is complete without a touch of seaside indulgence, and H&M HOME delivers a wide range of beach towels and accessories that combine functionality with fashion-forward design. From classic striped towels to vibrant beach bags, the collection ensures that every beach outing is a stylish affair.

As we embark on this journey of design discovery, H&M HOME invites you to join us in celebrating the art of summer living. Let us inspire, create, and redefine the boundaries of possibility as we embrace the endless potential of the season ahead.

THE ZEST AND SPICE OF INTERIORS – PRESENTING THE SECOND INSTALLATION OF H&M HOME ? PANTONE

Continuing on an energized and re-freshed spring season, this colourful capsule continues to explore how colours affect our surroundings, interiors and mood. For Sweet & Juicy, the two colourways include a spicy red and strong orange. Orange is a visible, bold colour, which elicits excitement and passion – and is of course closely related to the colour red. Red is the face of both love and anger. It’s a brightly intense colour, where little goes a very long way.

The Zesty & Fresh shades include revitalizing green, a fresh lime and bright yellow, bringing about freshness and crisp. Green hues evoke nature and the outdoors, feelings of balance, joy and serenity. It’s a colour perfect to enhance your mood and encourages peace – a natural addition to home interiors. The motivating colour yellow is equally centred around joy and happiness, but is also said to enhance communication and wisdom. It easily triggers feelings of happiness, reminding us of the sun and light.

“The vitality of colour is essential to the effect it has on our emotions, senses and how easily it transforms our living spaces with just a lick of paint. The new H&M HOME ?PANTONE capsule collection continues to play with the notions of this, but this time circles around the kitchen table. For this second edition, we have explored the connection between food, taste and colour. Perhaps you strictly favour the freshness of green and yellow, or simply want to mix it up adding the spice of red and orange as well. The choice is yours. We hope this collection featuring specifically curated PANTONE shades will make for a bright addition to our customers table settings.”

says Evelina Kravaev-Söderberg, Head of Design & Creative at H&M HOME.

The H&M HOME ? PANTONE collection of keep-sake interior objects features everything you need for a bright colour injection to your dining and living spaces. The collection includes both small and larger square shaped plates, where you can mix and match yellow and light green or orange and red as you see fit. Continuing on the dining theme, there are two sizes of serving bowls; medium which comes in orange and yellow and large, available in red or light green – perfect for a crisp spring salad. Smaller and ornamental yet essential collection items include a 4-pack of coasters, in a shade combination of red and orange or light green and yellow, in addition to a 2-pack of placemats in orange or yellow. A final touch comes in jars, available in two sizes; small and medium. These come in green and red. Decorative, shapely objects for any home space, consist of a footed bowl in red or green, perfect for any fruit or vegetable to be displayed and a classic vase, available in orange or light green.

Finally, there is a plethora of scented candles in a variety of vivid shades. For a scent of Mandarin Gelato, orange is the go-to candle or if one prefers Pink Grapefruit, then the red candle is a given. Lemon Verde is the scent of the yellow candle and finally, Green Basil for the green candle.

Recognized as the global colour authority, PANTONE provides a universal language of colour that enables colour-critical decisions through every stage of the workflow for brands and manufacturers. More than 10 million designers and producers rely on PANTONE products and services to help define, communicate and control colour from inspiration to realization, leveraging advanced X-Rite technology to achieve colour consistency across various materials and finishes for graphics, fashion and product design. H&M AND ROKH CELEBRATE CUTTING-EDGE COLLABORATION AT DOVER STREET MARKET

The evening in London’s Haymarket kicked off with an intimate performance by members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra inspired by Hwang’s love of cinematic scores, as guests took in the immersive installation by the innovative set designer Jabez Bartlett. Later in the evening, the experimental musician Arca played an exclusive DJ set while wearing a look from the collection that expressed her genre-defying sense of style.

Sought after for its twisted takes on classic wardrobe archetypes, the emerging brand rokh is forging a name for itself as one of the most exciting young labels in fashion under creative director Rok Hwang. Spanning womenswear, menswear and accessories, the rokh H&M collection will launch in selected stores and online at hm.com on 18 April. A curated edit of womenswear and menswear styles will also be available exclusively at Dover Street Market on 16 April for guests, and on 17 April for the public.

“rokh stands for individuality, so it was great to have so many unique talents from the worlds of music, art and design contributing to this fantastic launch event for rokh H&M. It made me so happy to see people wearing the looks from the collection in their own way,”

says Rok Hwang, creative director at Rokh.

“Rok Hwang has a clever, creative approach to fashion, so it was fitting that his rokh H&M collaboration was presented during an immersive evening where cutting-edge fashion combined with classical music and an inventive installation,”

says Ann-Sofie Johansson, head of design womenswear and creative advisor at H&M.

H&M MOVE AND WOMEN WIN TEAM UP TO PROMOTE GENDER EQUITY THROUGH SPORTS

H &M Move’s community program Move Together supports young people by helping them to overcome barriers and find a sense of belonging where they can thrive and move together. The local organisations involved in this partnership are based in Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Jordan, Mexico, South Africa, and UK. They all share a common goal and use football as a main tool to drive positive change, together with for example developing leadership skills, building self-confidence, and providing psychosocial support and health education.

“Solving gender equity is no small feat, but we believe in a future where every girl and woman can exercise their rights. For Women Win and the ONSIDE Fund, collaboration is our main vehicle to create change. By teaming up with H&M Move we can further strengthen the playing field for girls and break down traditional gender stereotypes associated with sports”

says Nicole Matuska, GRLS director at Women Win.

During March – as part of International Women’s Month – the group of trailblazing women representing the seven organisations came together in a digital, yet intimate meeting to share experiences and to get inspired by each other and by Nadia Nadim, professional football player and H&M Move’s Brand Mover.

“I started playing football in a refugee camp in Denmark. Once on the field, I felt happy, I felt free, powerful, confident and I felt accepted. I’m happy to be part of this collaboration and I truly hope that my drive can inspire young girls to chase their own dreams – wherever they live and however they move,”

says Nadia Nadim.

“Movement and sport have the power to create connections and collective energy to push boundaries – physical as well as mental and social. We are extremely impressed by the work performed by Women Win and these amazing local organisations contributing to girls and young women becoming change makers in their own lives as well as in their communities.”

says Diana Amini, Head of Move Together Program.

Please let us introduce the seven local organisations participating in this collaboration:

GUATEMALA: Jóvenes por el Cambio
Jóvenes por el Cambio is a youth-led collective using boxing and football to promote girls and women’s empowerment in urban and rural indigenous communities. Through their free sport activities, girls and young women build their leadership skills, gain self-confidence, and increase awareness about their rights.

JORDAN: Karak Castle Center for Consultations and Training
Karak Castle promotes gender equality by enhancing self-confidence, improving skills, and providing opportunities for participation with women and girls in the south of Jordan.

MEXICO: Komon tajkoltajbatik. A. C.

ARTIST ROP VAN MIERLO BRINGS HIS INVENTIVE ART TO H&M WITH A COLLECTION FOR KIDS AND BABIES

“When I created the Tiger, my first ‘Wild Animals’ painting, in 2008, it was purely a concept – I was trying to express an untamable animal in an untamable medium, using a wet-on-wet technique that I learnt at school as a child. Over the years, my series ‘Wild Animals’ has grown into a crazy-big body of work. I’m excited to present my work to a bigger audience in a more affordable way with this H&M collection,”

says artist Rop van Mierlo.

Light-hearted in spirit and uniquely collectible in style, the collection’s key looks pair simple silhouettes with lightweight fabrics energised by joyful colour and bold print. Five paintings are featured – including a jaguar, a zebra, a horse, two baby goats and a butterfly – as well as new works comprising hand-painted stripes, tie-dye-style prints and a paisley bandana. T-shirts in organic cotton are the hero items, each printed with a vibrant and unique animal painting, while eye-catching repeat pattern zebras and jaguars appear across a swimming costume, trunks and a bucket hat. Two terry sweater-and-shorts sets feature the bold tie-dye print. Meanwhile the hand-painted stripes appear in an earthy colour palette on a linen-mix dress with ribbon-tie straps, a relaxed shirt and shorts combo, a wrap skort and a baseball cap. In accessories, a zebra-print tote bag and bandana will be favourites for the whole family.

“The H&M design team fell in love with Rop van Mierlo’s inventive paintings of animals – some fluffy and cute, some intriguing and mysterious. We’re thrilled to share a curated mix of his most recognisable paintings as well as distinctive new works to our younger customers with a very wearable collection that captures the charm of his series called ‘Wild Animals’. We hope these pieces encourage a spirit of adventure and artistic experimentation,”

says Sofia Löfstedt, Head of Kidswear Design and Creative at H&M.

About Rop van Mierlo

Rop van Mierlo is a Dutch graphic designer and artist based in Amsterdam, with a loose, unconventional style that lends his work a dreamlike and sometimes humorous quality. He created the first of his ‘Wild Animals’ series of paintings for his senior thesis ‘Bonsai & Poodles’, which explored the human urge to control the natural world, while studying at Design Academy Eindhoven in 2008. Experimenting with a wet-on-wet painting technique inspired by one he first learnt as a child, van Mierlo’s animals have an intriguingly fluffy quality formed by the random bleeding of acrylic, gouache and ink on wet paper. Having collaborated with international fashion and lifestyle brands, in 2020 he launched ‘Wild Animals’ as a creative platform for products based on his paintings.

H&M REAWAKENS SPRING 2024 WITH MODERN TAILORING AND REFINED ROMANCE

The womenswear collection is a love letter to wardrobe treasures and modern femininity. Timeless suiting that’s both tailored and relaxed includes not only the blazer and trousers, but also waistcoats and hot pants. Blouses, dresses and skirts with romantic volume, pintucks and flounces. Power denim in the guise of 90s shapes and soft, washed-out blues add some toughness. A shiny silver A-line dress brings a final pop of energy.

Key pieces include a white mini-dress with balloon sleeves, ruching and drawstring details, a silver pencil skirt, a light denim shirt with body-skimming seams, and a white voluminous embroidered collarless blouse with wide cuffs. Feminine accessories like slingback kitten heels and pointy ballerinas are set against chunky, bold jewellery in silver tones.

“This season, we were really inspired by the idea of rebirth, like the first flowers blooming. So while there’s a romantic side to the collection, we also wanted to channel a strong, tailored vibe and workwear touches that could breathe life into the fashion wardrobe,”

says Eliana Masgalos, Concept Designer at H&M.

For menswear, modern tailoring and utilitarian elements are also key – a chore jacket, overshirts, blousons and pull-on trousers. With the addition of navy and chestnut to the colour palette, the result is minimalistic and easy-going. In kidswear, the first signs of Spring show up in floral prints, voluminous silhouettes, soft suiting and workwear-inspired pieces. Textures, embroidery on twills and satins, and both shiny and matte surfaces create a modern twist on charming classics.

“The kidswear collection this season has a distinct sweetness – satins, puff sleeves and all-over floral prints – but the tailoring and neutral colour palette gives it a clean edge, too,”

says Sofia Löfstedt, Head of Kidswear Design and Creative at H&M.
