BRITISH ARTIST LAKWENA BRINGS HER JOYFUL AESTHETIC TO H&M’S LATEST KIDS COLLECTION

“A lot of my work is about bringing joy and hope to public spaces. I want to build people and places up, rather than tearing them down. For this project I was thinking a lot about the values I want to instil in my three children, and in the younger generations in general, that will help to build them up: resilience, curiosity, courage. I like to think that this bright, bold H&M collection will help send messages of positivity and freedom out into the world,”

Artist Lakwena.

The Collection
Resolutely playful and positive in spirit, the collection’s key looks consist of streetwise wardrobe favourites energized with brilliantly bold colour, print and text. The optimistic mood is reflected in styling that prioritizes self-expression and heroes shared values of love and friendship expressed in the printed slogans. Phrases that read “Small but mighty” and “A lovely day” repeat in rainbow-bright hues across T-shirts and hoodies, either incorporated into squiggles and swirls or heroed as graphic texts printed across chests and running down arms. Then there’s the co-ordinating tank and leggings and the all-over print dress with a flared skater hem, infused with positivity. In accessories, a tote bag, back pack and over-the-shoulder pouch bag have universal appeal, covered all over with striking typography, while sneakers in happy patterns add a touch of fun to even the plainest of outfits.

“Confident and colourful, this smile-inducing collection provides a dose of optimism for our younger customers thanks to the distinctive visual language of Lakwena. We’re thrilled to collaborate with an artist whose eye-catching work promotes positive messages of love, unity and empowerment, offering our young customers a unique opportunity to express themselves,”

Sofia Löfstedt, Head of Design and Creative H&M Kids.

H&M MOVE AND ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIĆ TEAM UP WITH LAUREUS SPORT FOR GOOD TO EMPOWER YOUTH

This two-year partnership is set to engage 2,000 youths from socioeconomic vulnerable contexts in which the risk of social exclusion, bullying and school dropout is high. The collaboration promotes sports as a means of inclusion and education by offering free multi-sport activities in Milan, Rome, Palermo and Naples and the first move is summer camps in the four cities where participation is for free.

To demonstrate his unwavering support, H&M Move’s Brand Mover, Zlatan Ibrahimović, surprised the children participating in the summer camp held in Milan by actively joining their activities. Zlatan, committed to giving back, shares a personal connection to the program’s mission.

“Move Together is very much in line with my own ambition to give back to communities. I want to inspire through movement and to take away barriers. I often felt judged or excluded when growing up, but sports have helped me a lot, it’s given me confidence. It is crucial for everyone to find a place where they feel important “

says Zlatan Ibrahimović.

Move Together, H&M Move’s community program, focuses on young people experiencing the biggest barriers to movement, during the most formative time of their lives, where they are starting to discover their own sense of belonging in the world.

“Sport has a unique opportunity to bring people together and when moving together, the collective energy brings both joy and power to push boundaries. We are excited to partner with Laureus Sport for Good in our joint mission”,

says Diana Amini, Head of Move Together Program.

Laureus’ summer camps fill an important gap where many families experience challenges to afford meaningful activities during the school holiday. The collaboration will also continue when the next school year starts with various multi-sport activities to remove barriers to movement.

“We are happy to have H&M Move as an important partner in our mission to use the transformative power of sport. Through our activities, we aim to generate inclusion, combat discrimination, and help children develop essential life skills. Together, we are committed to addressing key issues such as gender inclusion, breaking stereotypes, supporting children with disabilities, and empowering vulnerable children”,

says Daria Braga, Director of Laureus Italy.

Moving from refugee status to international football star for the Danish national team, she became one of the most powerful women in international sports, while also speaking nine languages and being a Doctor of Medicine.

“Spreading inspiration around movement is important to me because sport represents inclusion. That is something that has always been a goal for me, ever since I was a 10-year-old girl dreaming of playing football. And as an athlete I’m very driven to motivate others to move – it can be small steps up or big league – but sports are so important to your health, both mentally and physically,”

says Nadia Nadim, H&M Move’s Brand Mover.

The training series is developed within the ‘Selected by’ concept, where Brand Movers take an active part in product-curation – and share their unique sportswear knowledge and personal style with the H&M Move design team.

The ’Selected by Nadia’ is a hand-picked set of cool and comfortable summer training pieces in fashion-led colours such as bright pinks, earthy neutrals, a hint of purple and the always-needed basic black pieces. Curated with functionality and style in mind, Nadia’s ‘Selected by’ collection features cropped tanks, a metallic pink biker shorts, a jumpsuit with seamless print details, a packable and lightweight jacket, and a selection of oversized sweats for those well-deserved post workout moments. Most pieces are made with H&M Move’s moist-transporting technology DryMove™ – a material that keeps you strong, active and confident all day long, however you move.

“I spend a lot of my time in the gym and the fashionable vibe of this collection will certainly turn my treadmill into a catwalk,”

Laidback, sophisticated suiting is key, accentuated by moments of brilliance with shiny details and a chic colour palette. Swimwear, strappy sandals and body jewellery are also real hero pieces – and the building blocks of any summer wardrobe,”

H&M AND MUGLER CELEBRATE THEIR COLLABORATION WITH A MULTI-FACETED SHOW IN NYC INVOLVING A CONCERT, CATWALK AND PARTY

Last night, on 19 April, at the Park Avenue Armory in Manhattan, NYC, H&M and Mugler celebrated the forthcoming launch of their much-anticipated collection with a cultural moment encompassing entertainment, music, performance and fashion. The event was attended by numerous members of the Mugler community – including Pamela Anderson, Charli XCX, Chloë Sevigny, Lourdes Leon and Dominique Jackson – who all wore pieces from the Mugler H&M collection.

The event featured a group concert by musicians Shygirl, Amaarae and Eartheater, all of whom star in the Mugler H&M music video and were dressed in exclusive looks from the new collection. Each artist performed a series of their own hits, before uniting to perform a new version of the 90s club classic “Music Sounds Better With You”, a track specially commissioned in celebration of the Mugler H&M collection.

The performances were punctuated by a runway show, alongside dance performances and DJ sets by Bobby Beethoven, Goth Jafar and Asmara at a subsequent after-party. The event was curated as a special hybrid, bringing together sound, style, live performance, club culture and dance, all while nodding to the theatricality and flamboyance that has been a signature of the house from its inception under Thierry Mugler through to its current incarnation under the direction of Casey Cadwallader. With over 800 guests in attendance, the event encapsulated the sense of diversity and inclusivity that is central to Mugler and that underpins the democratic ethos of the H&M designer collaborations.

“Mugler has always been a house with a lot of cultural soul, and this event was a celebration of our long association with music, dance and performance. It was the ideal celebration of the Mugler H&M collection, and the perfect way to welcome people into our world – an unforgettable night built around freedom, personal expression and liberating, bold fashion.”

– Casey Cadwallader, Creative Director at Mugler

“This event was a true cultural moment – a tribute to Mugler’s long history of welcoming people into a world of transformation and self-expression. When you think of Mugler you think of show-stopping fashion and catwalk theatrics, and this was just that.”

– Ann-Sofie Johansson, Creative advisor at H&M

“It felt amazing to be performing in the Mugler H&M collection. When you think of the history of Mugler you think of so many iconic musical moments and incredible performances, so it’s an honour to be included in Casey’s vision for this special celebration.”

– Shygirl

The H&M Mugler collection will be available in select H&M stores and online 11 May 2023.
